The New VMware Ecosystem Live at VMworld on theCUBE

VMworld: VMware’s user conference is now in its 10th year. Due to a robust ecosystem and passionate community, this is THE show for virtualization and one of the top events for cloud. VMware has maintained dominance in the server virtualization market, but there are a lot of questions coming into the show. For the fourth year, theCUBE will be broadcasting live video throughout the show to provide in-depth independent analysis and coverage of all of the angles of the show.

Over the last 18 months, there have been many changes in VMware’s executive team. Additionally, the Big Data (Cetas), Fast Data (GemFire) Development Platform (SpringSource), and PaaS (CloudFoundry) divisions are now part of Pivotal. Additionally, Zimbra and SlideRocket applications have been sold off, leaving VMware with the 3 pillars of software-defined data center (SDDC), hybrid cloud and end-user computing (EUC).

The interview line-up includes a list of new VMware executives including:

  • Pat Gelsinger – now CEO for a year
  • Carl Eschenbach – President and COO, the only unchanged C-level exec
  • Martin Casado – Chief Architect of Networking from the Nicira acquisition
  • Chuck HollisChief Strategist for Storage who recently joined from EMC
  • Sanjay Poonen – new GM for EUC who joined from SAP
  • Bill Fathers – GM of Hybrid Cloud Services BU
  • Ramin Sayar – GM of Cloud Management BU

The VMware alumni network is very active in the community. Big name former VMware guests this year includeRick Jackson (VMware’s former CMO, now CMO of Rackspace), Jerry Chen (former VP of VMware cloud now a VC with Greylock) and Poojan Kumar (former head of VMware Data Products, now Founder and CEO ofPernixData).

Discussion around the multi-hypervisor world is one of the hottest topics leading into the show. Almost every VMware technology and channel partner now offers solutions or integrations with Microsoft Hyper-V, KVM, Citrix Xen and/or Oracle OVM. Wikibon recently released a research report and customer survey results investigating the impact on VMware, cloud deployments and much more. See – VMware Dominant in Multi-Hypervisor Data Centers.

To discuss the cloud angles, guests on the program include Rackspace, AT&T, Savvis, Secure24 and an OpenStack discussion with the CTO of Piston Cloud and CEO of SwiftStack. VMware is making a strong push with its vCloud Hybrid Services (see video in this article for a discussion on some of the challenges it faces) and is making strides to not be blocked out of OpenStack deployments.

Finally, will VMware be able to keep an ecosystem that helps drive the company to continued growth, or will the tone be more of coopetition with the threat of new functionality built into the hypervisor that threatens to pull value and revenue away from storage and networking partners? Segments will dig deep into storage (HP, EMC, Barracuda, Fusion-io, CommVault, Virident, HDS and lots of end-users), networking (Juniper, Cisco/Insieme, Brocade, Cumulus Networks), converged infrastructure (VCE, Dell, Nutanix, SimpliVity) and much more.

In addition to all of the usual ways to participate (comment here, send us notes on Twitter or see us at the show), join the live online conversation at CrowdChat.com/VMworld.

Thank you to VMware, all of theCUBE sponsors and all of the participants in advance.
