AI Agents Are Reshaping Identity, Governance and Resilience

The Enterprise Is Entering a Post-Human Operational Era

Fresh off SailPoint’s Agentic Fabric launch and VeeamON 2026, one thing is clear: cybersecurity and resilience architectures are entering a post-human phase.

Traditional enterprise security, governance and resilience models were designed around humans interacting with applications and infrastructure in relatively predictable ways. Identity governance, access controls, backup, recovery, and compliance processes all assumed a human actor somewhere in the loop.

Enterprises are now preparing for environments where autonomous and semi-autonomous AI agents act as operational participants inside the business, interacting with data, workflows, infrastructure, APIs, and increasingly with other agents. The conversation is shifting from protecting users and systems to governing decisions, actions, and machine-generated outcomes.

That shift was visible from two different angles this week, as discussed in this video.

SailPoint: Governing Autonomous AI Identities

At SailPoint, the focus was on identity governance for AI agents and non-human actors. The company emphasized visibility, accountability, lifecycle management, and access governance for autonomous AI systems operating inside enterprise environments. The direction makes sense. Machine identities will vastly outnumber human identities over time, with some projections suggesting AI agents could exceed human workers by ratios approaching 100-to-1 in certain environments.

That fundamentally changes the scale and complexity of governance, privilege management, behavioral analytics, compliance, and auditability.

The problem is that AI agents do not fit neatly into traditional IAM models. They chain tasks together, inherit permissions, interact autonomously with data and services, generate secondary actions, and operate with levels of dynamism that human-centric governance frameworks were never designed to manage. Existing governance models were built around deterministic control and relatively predictable access patterns. Autonomous systems introduce entirely new challenges around visibility, accountability, entitlement sprawl, and lineage of AI-generated actions.

The big question enterprises now face is whether policies, procedures, and governance models can evolve quickly enough to safely support autonomous AI adoption at scale.

Veeam’s Push Into AI Resilience and Trusted Data

At VeeamON, the conversation approached the problem from a different direction: resilience and trusted data.

Veeam is attempting to define a broader category around AI resilience and data trust infrastructure, positioning data protection as an operational trust layer for AI systems. Veeam has been expanding beyond its backup roots for some time, but VeeamOn 26 represented the company’s most strategic expansion to date into resilience operations and trusted AI workflows following its acquisition of Securiti AI in December 2025.

The underlying premise is that AI systems are only as trustworthy as the data feeding them. As enterprises deploy AI into operational environments, new failure modes emerge, including poisoned datasets, corrupted vector databases, hallucinated automation chains, and autonomous systems making bad decisions at machine speed. So protecting AI environments requires not only protecting the underlying data pipelines, but also being able to validate, trace, and potentially roll back AI-driven changes and actions.

Looking further ahead, enterprises will need to recover not just systems and data, but trusted operational states, workflows, lineage, and validation around AI-influenced activities. While Veeam and other data protection vendors clearly see an opportunity to expand into broader operational trust and resilience layers for AI environments, it remains an open question how much business process context these platforms can realistically own versus adjacent operational, governance, and application platforms.

In a move towards addressing the need to evolve into more intelligent operational decision layers, this industry is leaning into “Resilience Operations,” a shift away from purely manual recovery execution in favor of AI-assisted, context-aware resilience operations that incorporate recovery prioritization, orchestration, contextual decision support, operational guidance, and faster, more precise recovery workflows.

What Practitioners Need to Do Next

Ultimately, both SailPoint and Veeam are responding to the same emerging enterprise challenge: how to understand, govern, validate, and recover from AI-generated actions operating at machine speed and scale.

For practitioners, the takeaway is becoming difficult to ignore. Existing governance and resilience models were not designed for autonomous machine actors deeply embedded in business operations. Organizations that adapt fastest will be the ones that establish visibility, accountability, lineage, and recoverability across AI-generated actions before those systems become foundational to day-to-day operations.
