Server SAN Functionality Exceeds Traditional Storage Arrays

The premise of this research is that Server SAN functionality is now the equivalent or better than the equivalent function in best of breed storage arrays. A key final piece of the puzzle has been the testing and inclusion of Permabit’s integrated thin provisioning, compression and de-duplication functionality by Red Hat, and its availability in the Linux stack, and with Red Hat Ceph and Gluster storage systems.

There is significant white space available for vendors to improve Server SAN, especially in the management plane.

Wikibon recommends Senior IT executives to initiate a plan for migrations to Server SAN or hyper converged solutions, if not already in place. Applications that are very performance sensitive may be the first to migrate, to take advantage of the very low latencies available.
